ANARTS Log Preparation with WriteLog

The rules of the ANARTS RTTY Contest state “a separate log is required for each band”.  In order to create separate log files for each band, you will first need to save your log in “ASCII with no formatting by band”.

When this option is selected, the “Save Copy As” window will open.  You can save this file anywhere you wish on your hard drive.  Personally, I like to keep all my log files separated from log files of other contests, so I create a separate folder with the name of the contest and keep all the files that need to be submitted in that folder.  By default, the name of the text file that will be created will be the name of the WriteLog file you have open with the .txt extension added.

Save the file.  Next, you need to open this file in a text editor such as Notepad or WordPad.  Highlight all the 80-meter contacts, right click your mouse (or CTRL C) and “copy” them.

After you “copy” the contacts, go to the File menu and select New.

A new “Untitled” page will open.  Right click your mouse and select paste (or CTRL V).

After pasting the 80-meter contacts, go to the File menu and select “Save As…”

In the Save As box, navigate (if applicable) to where you are saving all your files for this contest; rename the file to yourcall_80 and Save the file.  The .txt extension will automatically be added to the filename and your file will be named yourcall_80.txt.

Go back to the File menu and select Open.

Open the original “ASCII by band” file again.  This time, highlight all 40-meter contacts and perform the same steps that were performed in creating the 80-meter file.  Do this for each band.  If there is a band where you did not make any contacts, you do not need to create a file for that band.

Summary and dupe sheets are also required when submitting your log.  When you’ve made log files for each band, you can then create your dupe sheet by going back to WriteLog and selecting Export to “File version of dupe sheet…”

When the “Save Copy As” box opens, navigate to where you have saved all your log files, rename the file to yourcall and Save.  Note your log files do not show up in the folder because the dupe sheet file uses the .dup extension.

After you have saved your dupe sheet, you can then create your summary sheet.  Go back to WriteLog, go to the Contest menu and select “Create Summary Sheet”.

When the “Save As” box opens, navigate to where you are saving all your files (if applicable).  The default file in saving your summary sheet with WriteLog is an RTF File.  You do not want to save your file as RTF, so in the “Save as type:” pull-down menu, select “Text Files *.txt”.

When you select Text Files as the file type, your other text files will be visible in your folder.  Remember to change the file name of the summary sheet to yourcall_sum and Save the file.

After you Save your summary sheet, it will open up in Notepad and look something like this.

The summary sheet, when saved as a text file, is not aligned properly.  The one important thing that needs to be done is to select the appropriate category by placing an X to the left of it.  In this case, I operated as Single Op., All Band.  Another important addition would be to your Country (not done in these screen shots).  If you wish, you can “clean up” the file by realigning the text as shown below.  You may even want to eliminate unneeded text such as the other categories.  Be sure all the information is correct.

When you are finished editing the summary sheet, Save it.

You are now finished compiling all necessary files for submission.  Open your E-mail program and start a new message addressed to the contest manager.  For ANARTS, the contest manager is Colin, VK2CTD, and his E-mail address is mailto:ctdavies@bigpond.net.au.  In the subject line put your callsign and something like “YOURCALL 2003 ANARTS LOGS” or something similar.  Then attach the necessary files to your E-mail.

When the Insert Attachment box opens, navigate to the folder where you have saved your files.  Highlight all the necessary files as shown and Attach.  Do not zip the files into a Zip file.  Send them individually.

Once all files are attached to your E-mail, you may want to add a short note to Colin, and then Send the E-mail.

That’s it!  You’re done.  Colin will probably not directly confirm receipt of your logs but he should put a message out to the RTTY Reflector with a list of stations that he has received logs from.
